Handlingen följer två kvinnor med helt motsatta bakgrunder som möts på sitt arbete som servitörer på en diner i det trendiga området Williamsburg. Max Black, spelad av Kat Dennings, är en gatusmart servitris från fattiga förhållanden. Caroline Channing, som Beth Behrs porträtterar, är en före detta förmögen arvtagerska som tvingas börja arbeta efter att hennes far hamnar i fängelse för bedrägeri.
