Huvudkaraktären är Dino, en adopterad Tyrannosaurus Rex som lever tillsammans med sin pteranodon-familj. Genom att åka med dinosaurietåget utforskar Dino förhistoriska miljöer som djungler, kärr, vulkaner, sjöar och oceaner. Vid varje station möter han olika arter av urtidsödlor från skilda tidsepoker, vilket skapar utgångspunkten för seriens äventyr och kunskapsinhämtning.
Serien presenterar grundläggande begrepp inom naturvetenskap, naturhistoria och paleontologi på ett sätt anpassat för små barn. Genom Dinos möten med sina förhistoriska släktingar introduceras fakta om olika dinosaurier och andra fossila varelser. Serien kombinerar underhållning med pedagogiska element, där varje avsnitt fokuserar på att väcka nyfikenhet kring förhistorisk tid och evolution.
Dinosaurietåget använder animationen för att göra förhistoriska världar tillgängliga och intressanta för unga tittare. Serien innehåller även element av science fiction genom tidsresor och fantastiska miljöer. The only problem is: which kid is in charge of the club?
