Formatet bygger på att coacherna använder sitt gehör för att välja ut sina favoriter under blindauditionerna, där de inte ser artisterna förrän de väl har gjort sitt val. Under tävlingens gång elimineras deltagare successivt tills endast fyra återstår – en från varje coachs lag. I slutfasen avgör amerikanska tittare genom röstning vilken av de fyra finalisterna som ska koras till vinnare och få sitt drömkontrakt. Serien kombinerar musiktalang, mentorskap och publikinteraktion till ett format som har blivit framgångsrikt i många länder världen över.
